What is Title IX?
Title IX is a U.S. federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, including sexual harassment and sexual assault, in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, enforces Title IX.
Almost all education programs and activities receive federal financial assistance, including K-12 public and private schools, public and private colleges and universities, community colleges, and vocational schools.
A school that is subject to Title IX must have a designated Title IX Coordinator, a policy that prohibits sex discrimination, and a fair, prompt, and impartial grievance process for adjudicating Title IX-related complaints. This information should be easy to find on a school’s website and on campus.
